The Rise of Islamism in the 20th Century Essay Example for Free
The Rise of Islamism in the twentieth Century Essay Islamism is at this point an amazing power. It runs governments in Iran, Sudan, and Afghanistan. It is a significant power of resistance in Algeria, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, and the Palestinian position. The current paper will break down what conditions and occasions took into account the ascent of Islamism as a belief system in the later twentieth century? The initial segment will present the idea of eurocentrism. Following this, Kemalism and its impact on Islamism will be examined. In the last piece of the paper post-innovation and Khomeini and their job in the ascent of Islamism are featured. Eurocentrism can be portrayed as a marvel setting up the West as the focal point of the world by likening it with advancement and therefore make it the predetermination of the world to become westernized, since this is equivalent with being current. This advancement depends on the possibility that the West knows best (Sayyid, 127). This idea has its authentic roots in European expansionism and colonialism. The talk of eurocentrism is one of the significant strands with which the system of western worldwide force is held together (p. 129), since it gives them a feeling of nity and force, which fills in as authenticity for professing to be the focal point of the world. Restriction that needs to oppose this domineering request, can do so just in the conditions of that authority. This prompts another supposition of eurocentrism: there is nothing outside the Western task. (p. 135) KEMALISM After the post-provincial request and the decay of the Ottoman Empire, the Muslim world was overwhel med by Kemalist talks. Impacted by eurocentrism, Kemals vision was to emulate the European method of building and ruling a country to become like the West and accordingly become present day and arrive at political viability (Sayyid 155). This expect to become like the West brought about significant changes in Turkey and different nations being affected by the Kemalist talk. Before being abrogated by the Kemalist system, the caliphate comprised the nodal point, around which the Muslim solidarity and character was fabricated. Simultaneously it was the focal point of the Muslim political structure, appending Islam as an ace signifier to the state. (p. 57) Abolishing the caliphate isolated the connection among state and Islam. The objective of Kemalism was to disengage Islam from the state to have the option to build up an authoritative talk without coordinating Islam. Monitoring the way that the Kemalist government couldn't disregard Islam through and through, since the chance of utilizing it to assemble bolster despite everything existed, Kemal attempted to tie it in into his talk. Acts like the abolishment of the caliphate and putting every single instructive establishment under direct state control to maintain a strategic distance from Islamic ideas being instructed, looked to remove and even avoid Islam from the Kemalist Turkey. (pp. 63-64) The impact of Kemalism on the job of Islam was not the same as anticipated. Rather than depoliticize Islam the strategies of the Kemalist reactivated it. By expelling it from the focal point of their development of political request, they politicized it. Agitating it and scattering it into the general culture made it accessible for reinscription. The ascent of Islamism was empowered through the likelihood to explain it into a counter-authoritative talk. (pp. 72-73) Additionally, the social emergency, wherein the talk of Kemalism was in, was serious enough to cause Kemalism to seem temperamental and Islamism, on the grounds that right now appearing to be the main talk that was organized in an in any case shaky condition, could develop as restriction to Kemalism. It gave Muslim social orders social request and strength. By the by, the presence of Islam alone can't represent Islamism, since it's anything but an impression of the religion, yet it turns into a political talk that utilizes Islam to subvert the Kemalist system. Islamism utilizes the accessibility of Islam and expands its accessibility simultaneously. Through this relationship a two-way process develops in which Islam and Islamism are sorted out around one another. (p. 2) The most significant errand for Islamism was to set up Islamism as a counter-domineering talk through the development of request to have the option to govern contrary to Kemalism. Consequently, generally the development of Islamism was similarly subject to the accessibility of Islamism and the disintegration of Kemalism. (p. 77) The new authority of Islamism was just ready to develop in light of the fact that the bygone one started to disentangle. Explanations behind the disappointment were among others that the u ndertaking of Kemalism neglected to comprise every single social connection and couldn't make all subjects inside the Kemalist systems completely disguise this talk. It was not equitably spoken to in every single Muslim society and was along these lines not ready to force it completely. (p. 85) This inadequacy of the talk brought about the politicization of Islam, which simultaneously was additionally founded on the failure of the Kemalists to make their image of Islam as the regressive, odd and customary talk appear to be characteristic. (p. 86). On top the Kemalist system experienced issues to smother presence of an Islamist restriction. All together these elements debilitated the Kemalists hold as an authoritative talk. The main new counter domineering talk promptly accessible to substitute the disintegrating anciens system had all the earmarks of being Islamism, in spite of its lopsided nearness. (p. 86) POST-MODERNISM Around the 1970s, after the decrease of Kemalism, the circumstance started to change. It got conceivable to express political requests utilizing a jargon focused on Islam, with no endeavor to connect Islam with the West (Sayyid 155). This period, called post-innovation, comprises an evaluate of advancement, which attempts to annul the perspective on the West and innovation being equivalent words. It planned for breaking the substitutability of the West and present day. Decentring the West implied the debilitating of this developed western personality. In the event that the West stopped to exist as a bound together substance, it couldn't give the solidarity to establish advancement. (p. 110) Post-innovation didn't consider the To be as proceeding to be the nodal purpose of the talk of advancement and decentred the West. (p. 110) This post-present day mentality further prodded the rise of Islamism, since it was just ready to exist in a world in which there was doubt of a western meta-talk (p. 18). This chance of dismissal of westernization relied upon the acknowledgment that there was no authentic need of the western authority; and after two universal wars, decolonization and the decrease of Kemalism there was sufficient help for this presumption. Just in a setting in which it was conceivable to disarticulate and re-articulate the connection between the West and universalism su ch that it was no longer observed as the middle and equivalent to innovation, could Islamism develop. (p. 128)

RIGHT OF SELF DETERMINATION INTRODUCTION Self-determination can be defined as a right of peoples or the will of the people under international law to exist and to have access to government. This principle has at its spirit in the achievement of true representation and democracy based on the premise that the consent of the people can only give legitimacy to any government. The principle helped in shaping of our international community as it was mainly responsible for the decolonization process. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Right of Self-Determination" essay for you Create order Hence, this right is one of the most important, but yet it is debatable principles of international law. This right has served as a powerful slogan and a justification for the purpose of independence of many peoples. This right has primarily created controversy because it many a times challenged the State system through a derogation of the principle of territorial integrity, which results in tension between the interests of the States on one hand and the interests of the peoples on other. This coalition between the two has led to the creation of a principle as multifaceted as well as ambiguous. The right to self-determination complement fundamental principles of public international law like State sovereignty, the equality of States and territorial integrity, including the prohibition of force and the principle of non-intervention. With the aid of self-determination, indigenous groups raise claims of either secession from an already sovereign State or seek independence and free dom from the domination of foreign State. This right does not only exist under public international law but has its presence under international human rights law also, where it says, among other things, the equal rights of peoples within a State. Moreover, the right to self-determination is used as an argument in miscellaneous situations under international law wherein questions relating to liberation movements, rebels, aid and assistance or intervention against these groups and movements. Therefore, it can be said that there are many situations in the world where the right to self-determination has a great relevance. The interests of both the individual and the group concentrate on the ability to exercise their selections about how they wish to live their lives and to be free from the interference and imposition of others[2]. There are at least five different modes of right to self-determination: an individual right, potentially coextensive with some form of democratic governance; a right pertaining to members of groups and perhaps groups themselves, often framed as the minority rights of national, religious, ethnic or linguistic groups; a right with particular meaning in the context of indigenous groups, potentially extending to unique forms of political and territorial autonomy; a right associated with limited territorial change, often associated with historical agreements (such as the handover of Hong Kong); and a right to external determination of peoples, which implies a right to unilateral secession. The scope and purpose of the principle of self-determination has evolved significantly in the 20th century. In the early 1900à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s, international support grew for the right of all people to self-determination. This led to successful secession movements during and after World War I, II and then laid to the groundwork for decolonization in the 1960s. THE SCOPE OF THE PRINCIPLE OF SELF-DETERMINATION OF PEOPLES The meaning of the term à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âpeoplesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã means who are the holders of the rights of self-determination and has a primary effect on the establishment of the synchronization between the principle of self-determination and territorial integrity. Principle of self- determination has its universal realization[3] and subsequently, obligations arising from this principle are erga omnes obligations.[4] Since erga omnes obligations are attatch to the right of self determination, therefore, it implies that this principle applies to the whole inter national community. All states have a right to demand for self determination, if in case people are depriving of the right to self determination, as per internationally recognized interpretation of self- determination. Though, there is no recognized definition to any of terms, which could be admitted under the meaning of à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âpeoplesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã (for example, nation, minority, indigenous peoples and etc.), and for the term à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âpeoplesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã itself under international law[5]. As a fundamental human right, right to self-determination cannot be the right only of some special categories of peoples asit would lead to discrimination on the racial, ethnic, cultural, religious or other grounds, for which that particular group identifies themselves among others. According to the report of the international conference organized by the UNESCO Division of Human Rights, Democracy and Peace, the plain meaning of the term à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âall peoplesà ¢Ã¢â ¬ à includes peoples under colonial or alien subjugation or domination, those under occupation, indigenous peoples[6] and other communities who satisfy the criteria generally accepted for determining the existence of a people[7]. The only way to prevent discrimination between different groups of peoples is to define à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âa peopleà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã as a whole population of a particular territorial unit, for the purpose of interpreting the principle of self- discrimination under the present international law à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âa peopleà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã means: a) entire population of an independent state, governed in a way representing the whole population; b) entire population of non-self-governing territory; c) entire population of a particular occupied territorial unit living under foreign military occupation; d) entire unrepresented/ oppressed part of population of a particular territorial unit . This interpretation shows the primary connection between peoples and territory. THE CONTEMPORARY CONCEPT OF SELF DETERMINATION There are three important elements which helps in fulfilling the contemporary concept of principle of self-determination. These elements are as follows; The principle of uti possidetis, the conceptual distinction which exists between external (classical/post-colonial) and internal aspects of self-determination, and the secession in the view of international law regulating self-determination. There have been various decisions as accepted by various courts that emphasized on the importance of principle of uti possidetis, such as the Canadian Supreme Courtà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s (CSC) decision on Quebec decision and ICJà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s decision in the Burkina-Faso v. Mali case[8]. The Canadian Supreme Court noted that, the right of self-determination should be exercised à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âwithin the framework of existing sovereign statesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã and emphasized à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âthe maintenance of the territorial integrity of those statesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã [9]. Furthermore, ICJ described the principle of uti possidetis as à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âa general principle, which is logically connected with the phenomenon of obtaining independence, wherever it occursà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã [10]. Apart from the above discussions before the courts, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination ie., CERD passed a recommendation in 1996 which distinguished the internal self-determinatio n from the external self- determination. As per CERD internal self-determination means à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âright of every citizen to take part in the conduct of public affairs at any levelà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã .[11] The definition of the CSC regarding internal self-determination, which is acknowledged by the Court as a concept fulfilling the external self-determination, is as follows: à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âa peopleà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s pursuit of its political, economic, social and cultural development within the framework of an existing stateà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã [12]. Tibet. The Tibet case represents a post-Charter annexation reason being China seized independent Tibet in 1949 -1950. The early documents of the United Nations indicate that the right to self-determination of the Tibetan people, and the international community had to recognize Chinas the post-Charter military seizure as illegal. Till now, the situation in Tibet is not resolved and the Tibetan people still have the right to self-deter mination, and also have the right to their own governance and culture. But, China is sending large numbers of non-Tibetan people in Tibet. This is a violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. This is where the government of China has done the most damage to Tibetans and their culture, as in many parts of Tibet, Tibetans are in the minority, which has becomes a serious situation in the realization of self determination. China seeks to dilute Tibetans with others, so that if forced into any de-colonization process the Tibetan question might be viewed as an indigenous question rather than one involving full restoration of sovereignty. CONCLUSION In the above-outlines situations, it can be understood that people have the right to self-determination but yet it has not been realized. In many countries there are conflicts related to it. Unfortunately, many states involved in attempting to militarily eliminate the peoples with valid self-determination claims try to reduc e these conflicts to terrorism. So depending on which side of the fence you are on, group A is either a terrorist or a freedom fighter. Some of these regimes friends either acquiesce or actively support this erroneous assertion. Apart from this, the important concern is that states are openly violating their jus cogens and erga omnes obligations, so as to defend the principle of self- determination. And also, not enough people know sufficiently both the law of self-determination and the law of armed conflict to properly redirect. This right can, be immensely powerful as a political slogan, for example when used by a people seeking their freedom and independence as it was done during time decolonization process. But it can also be dangerous when used to stir up feelings of extreme nationalism in people. As what led to the genocide in Rwanda was a complex situation that dates back to the colonial period. Surely, democracy must be the remedy here and not redefining the term à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âpeopleà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã or the principle of territorial integrity. In any case, this dilemma does not seem to have a solution for the moment, nor in the foreseeable future as one author admits. In my opinion there is clearly a need for the double nature of the right to self-determination in international law and relations. It is therefore difficult, bordering on impossible, to reach an agreement on a more precise definition of the right, its content and scope. Analysis Of The Text On Liberty By John Stuart Mill
Regarding Millââ¬â¢s argument ââ¬Å"If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind,â⬠the justification for this statement is to present his ideology on the subject of free speech. According the text ââ¬ËOn Libertyââ¬â¢ by John Stuart Mill, his position with respect to free speech is that even one person had a specific opinion, mankind is not given grounds to silence him. Millââ¬â¢s argument regarding free speech is valid because he protects the liberty of the individual over the popular opinion of society. I agree with Millââ¬â¢s point of view because I also believe that everyone should have the voice to express what they wish,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Free speech is a right to be practiced by a conscious human as Mill says. He writes that human liberty has three main types of classifications: the domain of consciousness, lib erty of tastes and pursuits, and the freedom to unite for the purpose of not causing harm to others. As a result, I agree that the harm principle must the only objection that should limit to this notion, as a more utilitarian society is what is more favoured for maximum pleasure. It is evident that Mill realizes that a person, we have our own independent autonomy, which he acknowledges throughout the text. Mill believes in the protection of freedom of speech, action and association, which indicates how the society should not prevail over the individual for its own good. However, when regarding utility, he points out, if the society is also benefited, that it is the preferred mode, but I think it is important to identify how he says that if their opinion is not causing harm, then the society is not negatively affected. Although I agree with this theory, I however, am critical to Millââ¬â¢s vagueness over what ââ¬Å"harmâ⬠is. Harm can be defined in multiple different altitudes and degrees, and therefore it is difficult to precisely determine it definitely. Nevertheless, this limitation of free speech in Millââ¬â¢s essay is what concluded on my agreement to his argument. Chronic Illness and Disability Integrated Nursing Concept
Question: Discuss about the Chronic Illness and Disability for Integrated Nursing Concept. Answer: Introduction: According to Chang and Johnson (2014, p.1), chronicity can be defined as an illness that lasts for a long duration, not showing any signs of resolving spontaneously or with the help of medications. This chronicity or chronic condition has become common for nurses of Australia, where they have to handle patients with co-morbid diseases along with a chronic illness. In medical terminology, usually, chronicity is related to illness rather than to diseases. Chronic illness gets more emphasis than the diseases in the nursing department. Along with providing care to the chronic illness, they have to treat the patient for depression, a very common co-morbid existence with illness. Chronicity is also related to a specific human condition where the health is affected by a disease or rather an illness that lasts for a longer time than usual with long lasting effects. However, in accordance with Hickman et al. (2010, p.63), along with illness or diseases, chronic depression is noticed by the nurses treating the patients. This has become one of the greatest challenging situations that nurses in Australia are facing while they provide treatment and care to the service users. From a nurses perspective, it can be seen that along with the illness, the co-morbid chronicity of other complex illness is often seen. Chronicity refers to such a disease or illness which persists in a patients body more than three months, according to the health studies of Australia. Chronicity usually, cannot be prevented by medicines or vaccinations. As suggested by Ski et al. (2012, p.2228), they do not disappear and keep on affecting the patients health from worse to worst. Often it is seen that patients develop multiple diseases from the chronicity of illness and it becomes a challenge for the nurses to take care of the service users. This has been noticed in older people who become difficult to handle and give care to the sufferers. It can be seen that diseases, no matter how acute they are, can be brought under control with the help of medications or vaccines. However, an illness like depression, which is growing as a co-morbid chronic illness along with diseases, is making the situations tough for the nurses. Nurses are failing to take proper care of the patients, especially the older people who are developing a complex illness out of the chronicity. Care need management should be adopted by the nurses and hospitals so that the health requirements of the patients can be met. Using the Chronic Care Model can help the hospitals in managing strategies for improving the situation. Emphasis can be given to the self-management, evidence-based practice and interdisciplinary care. If a case of numerous morbidity is registered it should get the immediate attention of the nurse so that all the existing illness can be identified in the time required medications can be provided to them. If multiple disabilities are seen, required care providers should be allotted to the patient. Since most of the patients are moving towards depression, the nurses find it difficult to treat it with the prescribed medications. In the words of Lubkin and Larsen (2006, p.22), the matter is gaining weight from the nurses perspective and hence required strategies should be applied. However, it is seen that in the recent years, patients are suffering from chronic illnesses which are developing a chronic co-morbid illness like depression making the job of the caregiver difficult. It should be handled with intense care and appropriate strategies. Those who are developing multiple illnesses, a different approach are required to handle them and give them the best treatment. The design of the health system in Australia needs to be changed for better support to the patients. Reports have been registered with the news that for some last years there has been a lot of changes in the practice of duties of nurses. The healthcare as a whole has received certain changes for the benefit. Nurses along with the medical sector have faced patients who were suffering from chronic illness and developed serious co-morbid illnesses too. With the changing trend, it became necessary to adopt strategic planning so that the required necessities of the patients can be met. There is seen that some of the patients do not get the required treatment on time. Moreover, the treatment that they receive, does not comply with the international standard. The most important change that is required to give proper health services to the patients is to improve the financing of the heath care organisations. Allocation of wealth must be done in an effective manner so that advancement can be made in the field of technology to identify the chronic illness and given the required treatment. With proper finance, more than one specialised nurse can be allocated to the critical patients so that the care is given according to the international standard. This would benefit the patient as well as the health care organisation. This initiative of facilitating more finance to the institutes would definitely help the organisations to gather good health standard. Another initiative that has been taken by the government of Australia in improving the health condition of the people living there is improving the condition of the primary health care organisations. Medicare centres along with primary health centres have been set up to combat the chronic illness that is affecting the health of the people (Aspin et al. 2010, p.386). The initiative has also been taken in connecting the services of the primary centres with hospitals and aged health services. Old people are ones who are suffering the most from the chronic diseases which are leading to other co-morbid illness which is causing great harm to their lives. The government of Australia had taken another initiative to rectify the problem of health being affected by chronic illness. The Australian national preventive health Agency targeted to prevent illness like obesity to stop the harm that the chronic diseases were doing to the lives of the people. There was prevention of the consumption of alcohol and tobacco so that the people can enjoy a good health being saved from chronic health diseases. The government has to invest more in the field of prevention so that people can be made aware of the adverse effect their irregular lifestyle (Hendersonb et al. 2014, p.337). An effective system should be applied from the governments part. The role of the Australian government is very important in making rules and regulations regarding the increasing number of people suffering from chronic diseases and also suffering from depression. There are certain changes that have been brought in the network of the health homes and the hospitals. According to the rules and regulations, none should be deprived of treatment irrespective of their colour and creed. The initiative of making people aware that a healthy lifestyle; e can let you live healthy is the best policy undertaken to explain the importance of good health. The Australian government should be efficient enough to apply all that they have thought (Harris and Zwar, 2007, p.104). Hence, the initiative should be taken to rectify the loopholes so that efficient health system can be built and meet the requirements of those suffering from chronic diseases. Allocation of nurses should be done in accordance with the requirement of the patient. This would help to improve the national health standard. Indonesia Essays - Provinces Of Indonesia, Maritime Southeast Asia
Indonesia Indonesia This report will be on the History in Brief of Indonesia, the Government of Indonesia, the island of Java, and the Geography of Indonesia. In early days, the region from India to Japan, including Indonesia, was known to the Europeans as the Indies. Chris Columbus was looking for a westward sea root from Europe to the Indies, when he arrived in America. During 1600s the Dutch political control began to spread Indonesia. Indonesia declared it's independence in 1945 and fought the Dutch until 1949, when they gave up their control. At first, the Dutch allowed nationalist movement to develop. In 1905, it had introduced councils to govern the towns and cities. By 1920, there were 32 such councils, with little electoral franchise. Other councils were also established. They included provincial councils in Java, and group communities councils outside Java. The current government of Indonesia is based on a constitution written in 1945. A president serves as the head of government. The presiden t appoints a sheet of advisers consisting of top military leaders and civilians. In theory, the assembly is supposed to establish a general direction of the government's policies. A house of peoples Representatives is the nation's parliament, however, in practice neither the assembly nor the house has real power. Instead, it is the president who makes all of the important decisions. The president is elected to a five-year term the Peoples Consultative assembly. The assembly has 1,000 members. It includes the 500 members of the people's representatives. It also includes 500 members of regional, occupational, and other groups. All assembly members serve five-year terms. The assembly usually is only held once every five years. The 500 members of the People's Representatives includes 400 who are elected through a system that insures that the government's political organization win most of the seats. Serviceman have no vote, so the remaining 100 are appointed by the president on the reco mmendation of the commander of the armed forces. Indonesia is divided into twenty-seven provinces. The provinces are divided into regencies and municipalities. These units are further divided into villages. Officials of all local government units except villages are appointed by central government from lists of people nominated by regional legislators. Indonesian villages elect their own village officials to provide local government. Java lies between Sumatra (to the west), and Bali (to the east). To the north is the Java Sea. To the south is the Indian Ocean, which Indonesians call the Indonesian Ocean. The greatest distance from North Java to South Java is two hundred kilometers. From East Java to West Java is over one thousand kilometers. The island of Java has five administrative units: the special territory of Jakarta Raya, Java Barat , Jawa Barat, Jawa Tengah, the special territory of Yogjakarta, and Jawa Timur. Chains of volcanic mountains run along the island from west to ea st. These mountains are apart of a fold in the earth's crust which extends from Southeast Asian mainland through Sumatra and Java to the lesser Sundra Islands. Java itself has 112 peaks. The volcanic soil is extremely fertile and this are supports a large population. Tangkuban Prahu in West Java is a live volcanoe that attracts many tourists. A similar mountain in the Sunda Straights, Krakatoua, is famous for its eruption in 1883. The whole northern portion of the peak was blown away. The explosion was heard over 700 kilometers away. The resulting sea waves caused over thirty six thousand Indonesian deaths in the low lying of West and South Jakarta. Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia that consists of more than 13,600 islands. The islands lie along the equator, and extend more than 5,000 kilometers. Many of the islands cover only a few square kilometers but about half of New Guinea (an area called Irian Jaya), and three fourths of Borneo (Kalimantan), also belong to Indonesia. New Guinea and Borneo are the second and third largest islands in the world after Greenland.

The eNotes Blog 10 Simple Study Strategies forFinals
10 Simple Study Strategies forFinals 2. Get Organized Early Tis the season for holiday cheer and final exam fear! Perhaps youââ¬â¢ve been here before, recognizing that the only thing standing in the way of your highly anticipated winter break are a few assessments that demand your time and attention. It can be a daunting realization that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and anxious. We understand your frustration and the prospect of procrastination, so weââ¬â¢ve come up with 10 simple study strategies to help reduce stress and boost your confidence as you prepare for finals. 1. Create a Schedule Time management is the key to success. Use a planner or calendar to carve out at least 15 to 20 minutes a day for study time. This could be as simple as reading notes on the bus, before bed, or while you have some downtime between classes. By dedicating just a few minutes each day to reviewing your exam materials, the better chance you have of retaining the information long-term. 2. Get Organized Early Donââ¬â¢t wait until the week before your exam to start collecting your study materials. The earlier you start gathering and creating your study aids, the easier youââ¬â¢ll make the study process. Getting an early start allows you to have plenty of time to locate missing assignments, create detailed study guides, and even reserve study rooms in advance. Plus, it will feel great to not have to dig through your entire backpack when youre ready to study.à 3. Start with Your Most Difficult Subjects It may be helpful to create a to-do list, so you can assess what will take up most of your time. If you know that you have a dense, cumulative exam in your most challenging course, start prepping for that first, even if it is not your first exam. By gauging how much time different tasks will take you, youââ¬â¢ll be able to enhance your time-management strategies and focus your attention on the content you need more time to learn. 4. Join a Study Group Studying together allows students to share information and insight that you may not have retained on your own. Even if you havenââ¬â¢t talked to anyone in your class, youââ¬â¢ll be surprised how many of your classmates are willing to help each other come exam time. Itââ¬â¢s nice to have the support and realization that you are all in the same boat. à Also, you donââ¬â¢t have to have had study groups at the library. Try hosting a potluck study dinner or meeting up for an ice cream. Surrounding yourself with other people who want to perform well on the exam will be contagious! à 5. Change Up Where You Study By changing up the places you study, the less dreadful the process can be. The library during finals week is like Walmart on Black Friday. Look into other places on campus, coffee shops, or even a quiet place outside. The goal is to find an environment that has limited distractions and encourages focus. Changing your study environment will help you remember more material, because you can associate it with the different places you were studying when you learned it. à 6. Limit Distractions Put away your phone. If you have too much separation anxiety, at least turn it off for 20 minutes. We all know how easy it is to start aimlessly scrolling through hours of news feed. By removing distractions altogether, youââ¬â¢ll be surprised what you can get done. If you really canââ¬â¢t avoid surfing the internet, it may even be helpful to block certain websites for a couple hours. I promise that the video of the cute sneezing panda will still be there once youre done.à 7. Talk to Your Teachers Believe it or not, not all teachers want you to fail the final exam. Try to find a good time to ask your teachers questions. You can attend their office hours, chat before or after class, and even send them a short email if you canââ¬â¢t track them down in person. Your teachers are the ones creating the exam; therefore theyââ¬â¢ll be the best guides at determining if you are on the right study track. You may be surprised about how much they reveal about the exam and what you can do to ensure a high score. Plus, it never hurts to showcase the effort you are making to study the materials they worked to teach.à 8. Simulate Test Conditions Test anxiety can drastically alter the outcome of your performance. Regardless of how much you prepare, sometimes nerves just get the best of you. Itââ¬â¢s extremely helpful to simulate test conditions and take a practice test. Go into a quiet room, set up a timer, and put away anything you wonââ¬â¢t be allowed to use during your actual exam. This will give you a feel for how things will be during test time and hopefully make you feel more confident about what to expect. This is extremely helpful for exams that require short-answer or essay sections. 9. Allow Breaks and Rewards Studying can be a grueling task. You do not need to lock yourself in a room with fluorescent light for six hours. If youââ¬â¢re partaking in a long study session, allow yourself to take breaks at least every half hour. Take a walk outside, call a friend, or do the hokey pokey. You do not need to punish yourself throughout your study process. You deserve to reward yourself after a solid study session. Find things that will help motivate your studying so that youll feel more inclined to complete your work.à 10. Take care of yourself Mental and physical health are super important, especially come finals time. Stress will make you sick and susceptible to the seasonal bug that is lingering among your classmates. There is no need to pull an all-nighter if you manage your time wisely. (I know, easier said than done.) By ensuring you get enough sleep, exercise, and are not submitting to a vending-machine diet, you will be in a much healthier state come exam time. You should also look into what free services your school provides to students during finals, which often includes massages, puppy play dates, and tons of free food. à As good olââ¬â¢ Benjamin Franklin once said, ââ¬Å"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.â⬠You do not have to dig yourself into a hole this exam season. You have all the tools to be successful. Remember, everyone has a unique style of studying, so find what works for you. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor! _________________ Donââ¬â¢t forget to check out - we have over 40,000 bookà study guides written by teachers, literary scholars, and PhD candidates and a variety of study tools including practice quizzes, eTexts, and essay assistance. Information and communication technology in society Essay
Information and communication technology in society - Essay Example de worse by the time limit which makes it difficult for the young people to afford surfing for a longer time than their money would facilitate (Looker et al 2009 p 44). As such, they search for information quickly so as to save internet expenses thus leaving no space to evaluate the information they find. This leads to poor translation which results to cases of plagiarism especially in higher institutions of learning. While searching for information on the internet using the search engines, it is always useful to use key words that would display specific information required. Research shows that young people are poor in this as they most of the time use long sentences that makes the searching process tedious and inaccurate (Luyt 2008). As such, they waste a lot of time before they could find information due to trial and errors. According to research, young people tend not realize that internet is not just the search engines such as Google, but a collection of many providers. This is due to the fact that they concentrate much of their information seeking on these search engines instead of widening their scope (Dresang 2006 p 25). As such, they get limited knowledge on the constituents of the internet, which could provide more valuable and effective information or which could help them quantify their ability to use the internet. Digital divide is the gap that exists within the society due to the fact that not all persons have been able to acquire the skills to use internet technology (Rooksby 2008 p 181). This results from the difference in income generation between various individuals whereby some have the capability to acquire the necessary equipment which facilitates connectivity. According to research, almost 50% of adults in America alone do not have access to internet technology, a situation that is attributed to financial constraints (Warschauer 2004 p 115). It also shows that those with internet connection have a high chance of getting a job than those

Viewing the Globe in 2006 and 2056 Part 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Viewing the Globe in 2006 and 2056 Part 3 - Essay Example We live in a three-bedroom apartment in the suburbs of Nairobi. The building we live in is home to ten other families mostly from other parts of Africa and a few from various Asian ethnicities. My kids go to a nearby public school that offers a wide variety of courses and English as a medium of instruction. My day starts at six am in the morning when I get up to make breakfast and send my kids to school. Then, my husband and I get ready for work and go to our offices. I fetch my kids from school and drop them to a childcare facility located nearby my place in the break time and go back to work. When my day ends, I pick them from the centre on my way back home. However sometimes, my kids have to stay for a little longer since transport and urban mobility has been a growing concern of the city. The over-crowding has also led to health issues concerning water sanitation and hygiene. For instance, in the last week Parent-Teacher meeting at Josh and Eesaââ¬â¢s school. I found many pare nts complaining about their children turning sick. Also, they city is ever expanding and I have been hearing a lot of debate about the diminishing energy and water supply. Recently, my husband and I are encountering various apprehensions about our children.

Being Black Essay Example for Free
Being Black Essay For my second formal writing piece I am considering writing about Shelby Steeles essay ? On Being Black and Middle Class. I find this piece interesting because Steele starts his piece with a contradiction his friend makes, and then he continues to unfold his view on the matter and how he started to change his mind over periods of time during his life. ?If you were black, you were just black and that was that (p. 687). Although I am not black, I have discovered that all of us change our views as we grow older. I love the examples Steele uses to describe his change of mind. He comments that ? race never fully explained our situation in American society (p 687). Class also plays an important role on who you become in life. Steele explains that the middle-class blacks in the sixties were caught in a double-bind in life; the race which they belong to and also the class in which they were brought up in. I agree with him on this point. Class has a lot to do with who you become and where you go in life. Even now, race plays a major part as well. People still look at others differently because of the color of their skin. Steele describes that society wants blacks to see themselves as a ? minority and I agree with that. I have heard many people comment on how someone performs a job using the color skin as an excuse. As a society, I believe that we are still trying to separate races and classes. Just like certain whites are looked down upon because of their living standards, the same happens to many blacks. ?The black middle class has always defined its class identity by means of positive images gleaned from middle- and upper-class white society, and by means of negative images of lower-class blacks (p 690). I agree with this because many people today dont seem to think there is such a thing as the black middle-class. Blacks are mainly thought of as lower-class citizens and whites as upper- and middle-class citizens. The people caught up in this class must make themselves known. They are their own people, not a mixture from others. Steele describes one of his professors telling him that he wasnt really black because he wasnt disadvantaged (p 692). This professor was classifying all blacks as disadvantaged, and if a black person happened to make it into the world as an individual, they were supposed to drop all connections with their race and their background. Obviously this is unacceptable. You are never able to forget and ignore your past and the people you came from. They are a part of you for your entire life. Another professor describes a situation where he was unable to allow blacks to stay in his boarding house because the color of their skin might offend the other boarders. As Steele puts it, ? he could not recognize that he was asking me to betray my race in the name of my class (p 694). Everyone must be able to identify with themselves as a whole person. Your race, your class and the role you play in society. If Steels had known better, he would have realized that he was actually being insulted non-directly. He is unable to change the color of his skin, but both professors were degrading the race he was a part of. This race is embedded in him and he should never forget it. Time has past and he now has come to this realization, but people need to be aware of what is being said around them. Those comments were unacceptable. Today is a bit different because in the sixties people could get away saying those type of things. Its harder to say things like that now. Almost anything can be taken as an insult somehow nowadays. Those are the main parts of Steeles essay and I will be using more details in describing these matters more clearly. Race and class both play a major part in all of our lives, and we need to be aware of where we are in society.

War of 1812 Essay -- essays research papers
The War of 1812 Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The war of 1812, supposedly fought over neutral trading rights, was a very peculiar conflict indeed. Britain's trade restrictions, one of the main causes, were removed two days before the war started; the New Englanders, for whom the war was supposedly fought, opposed it; the most decisive battle, at New Orleans, was fought after the war ended. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã During the Napoleonic wars, Britain and France had disrupted US shipping, confiscated American goods, taking US seamen into the British navy, and both sides had blockaded each other's ports. This caused great annoyance to American traders, and Britain's abduction of American sailors especially caused great uproar and indignation at home. Many called for war, although it is interesting to note that it was southerners and westerners, the so-called war hawks led by Clay and Calhoun, who supported war who were least affected by Britain's actions. Some historians attribute this to their desire to take British Canada and Spanish Florida in the process of war. The Republican administration, traditionally supportive of France, finally declared war on Britain in 1812, ironically two days after Britain had lifted their trade embargo. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Two and a half years of fighting commenced, and when the peace treaty was eventually signed in Ghent, there was no mention whatsoever of neutral rights. The treaty gave neither si...

Compare and Contrast of the The Shang-Zhou River Valley and Egypt
Egypt and the Shang-Zhou Dynasty were both powerful and influential civilization who faced similar ideas in their government, and defense strategies, but differed when it came to cultural rituals, and the use of natural resources.A solid form of government is essential to any civilization, and although Egypt and Shang-Zhou were both successful, they both used different and similar methods to conform to their religious and social standards.Egypt used a Pharaoh as their king, which they claim the pharaoh was sent from a god in order to maintain maââ¬â¢at, the distinctive order of the universe. On the contrary, the Shang- Zhou Dynasty followed their own theory of the Mandate of Heaven. The Mandate of Heaven served as a foundation for the Chinese government for three thousand years, and was used when a ruler had neglected his duties such as dishonoring gods, expressing tyranny, or ignoring warning signs of disasters; heaven could remover this ââ¬Å"mandateâ⬠and put it in the po ssession of a more worthy ruler or family. After a ruler has fulfilled their duties and depart the physical world, both Egypt and the Shang-Zhou dynasty honor them in every way possible, however both have separate rituals and beliefs in how they should be honored. In Egypt, the Pharaoh is built a remarkable pyramid in which their body is mummified, and buried deep down in the structure. During the Shang-Zhou Dynasty, the royal family and the elite families were not buried in a pyramid, but rather in tombs with many of possessions they might need in the afterlife. To run a successful government, there has to be order and record keeping to keep from conflict and having all property, belongings, etc. needs to be officially stated. The Egyptians developed their own writing, known as hieroglyphics, on papyrus to records all their statements. Instead of hieroglyphics and papyrus, the Shang-Zhou also developed their own writing of symbols which they wrote on oracle bones to keep order in the ir society. A significant connection between the two is that both civilizations were a theocracy because they both believed that their leader was divine and the closest to God. Both Egypt and the Shang-Zhou Dynasty shared the idea of charging taxes in exchange for landowning and service in the military.Charging taxes influenced many civilizations because in order to be a resident, some sort of service or duty had to be given in exchange. In retrospect, Egypt and the Shang-Zhou dynasty both shared similarities in their government which helped them grow as a large, powerful society, but also varied in some methods mostly because of religion beliefs.Environment plays an intense role in any region of the world because it determines the lifestyle for how that civilization will prosper over time. Being located in Africa, near the equator, Egypt has the consistent face of a hot, dry, and sunny climate. The Shang-Zhou dynasty territory is locatedà east of Africa and slightly towards the n orth. Therefore, Southern China gets heavy rainfall due to the monsoons in India and surrounding areas, and the northern part of China gets rainfall as well, but is inconsistent. Being that China gets a fair amount of rain, most of their agriculture is dependent on that rainfall. Instead of depending on rainfall, Egypt is primarily dependent on the Nile River which is the longest river and provides the best source of irrigation.A benefit to both the Shang-Zhou Dynasty and Egypt is that they both are in some way surrounded by natural barriers which serve as a mechanism for defense. Egypt has the Nile River which makes it difficult for invaders to get across to attack. The Shang-Zhou area has the Himalaya mountain range to the southwest, the Pamir and Tian Mountains and the Takla Makan Desert to the west, as well as the major rivers, the Yellow and the Yangtze, to also help to protect their society. Natural barriers are a huge advantage and blessing because they can distinctively mark territories as well as serve each civilization in a way as to help them advanced and develop while lowering the likelihood of getting attacked and weakening a civilization. The natural elements are what make a society capable of flourishing and both Egypt and the Shang-Zhou Dynasty used all of their resources to their advantage to prosgress into a sophisticated and highly respected culture and society.
